This week has been pretty quiet in terms of news surrounding the UCLA football program. However, news just broke about an alleged attempt by the USC Trojans to outbid the Bruins for the services of Eric Yarber.
Apparently the Trojans went after Yarber quite vigorously, even getting athletic director Pat Haden involved in the process. Haden made several phone calls and attempted a few different recruiting pitches of his own to land the coveted wide receivers coach, including a lucrative offer (much higher than that of UCLA). In a shocking turn of events, the Bruins upped their ante for Eric and were successful in landing their man.
In past times the Bruins might have bowed out immediately with knowledge that they could not offer the terms or figures to compare with that of USC. But times are changing, and this is yet another indicator of the Bruins will to vastly improve their struggling football team.
Coach Yarber nearly was able to get stud wide receiver Bryce Treggs to switch his commitment from California to the Bruins. Treggs was exceptionally excited to have been in touch with Yarber and cherished the thought of playing under his tutelage. But at the end of the day, he remained a man true to his word.
Still, Yarber is undoubtedly one of the most talented coaches of wide receivers in the game having experience in both the college game and in the NFL. It was a tremendous get for the UCLA football program that looks to nurture up and coming receivers such as Devin Lucien, Ricky Marvray and Shaq Evans.
