USC football head coach has been named 2011 Southern California coach of the year by theĀ Los Angeles Sports Council and will receive the award at the annual L.A. Sports Awards ceremony to be heldĀ March 15 at Club Nokia at L.A. Live.

Kiffin led the Trojans to a 10-2 record this past season despite sanctions imposed by the NCAA that restricted scholarships and banned USC from postseason play. Although the Trojans could not compete for the Pac-12 title, many observers felt after their win at Oregon in the final weeks of the regular season that they were indeed the best team in the Pac-12.

Heading into the 2012 season Kiffin has USC poised to be one of the top ranked teams in the nation and with Matt Barkley returning at QB they’ll be the likely favorite to win the Pac-12 conference.

Past winners of the L.A. Sports Award for coach of the year include Bruce Arena of the Galaxy, Mike Scioscia of the Angels and Phil Jackson of the Lakers.

The LA Sports Awards show will be broadcast by FOX Sports West (air dates to be determined)
