Guerrero to Raise UCLA Ticket Prices. But at what Cost?

Written by on February 8, 2012 in Bruins, Editorials - No comments

By now you may or may not have heard that athletic director Dan Guerrero is thinking about raising season ticket prices for UCLA football games. This coming off of the extremely successful recruiting class that was just wrapped up a week ago today.

In other words, for the first time in a very long time, the UCLA football has momentum. An ace football staff was hired to replace the abysmal group that left the Bruins tattered and unimproved. The team finished last season with a rare 6-8 record, including dropping games against Oregon in the Pac-12 championship and to Illinois in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

The hiring of new coaches Mora, Mazzone, Klemm and Martin among others has brought forth a sense of optimism to Westwood. A sense of relief is exhaled by Bruin fans as the first culprit is gone. But still, former coach Rick Neuheisel was not the initial target. Many fans were clamoring for the job of Guerrero, who seemingly has misplayed too many situations while looking out for what appears to be his best interest.

Fans have come to quickly accept Mora and his new staff thanks in due part to his recruiting success, but that does not mean that the team is off of the hook that easily. Upon arriving to UCLA, new coaches have recruited extremely well. Coach Neuheisel pulled in the fifth-rated class after his first season in 2008. Still, he posted a record 21-29 with the Bruins in four seasons. Then there was Karl Dorrell, who in 2004 brought the Bruins back into the top-25 rankings, landing in the 24th position after UCLA failed to position itself the year prior; this despite the dominance of USC at the time. He was not successful either, posting a 35-27 record. Could this be a precursor to what is in store for Coach Mora?
